(hōryūji)

Hōryū-ji is a Buddhist temple located in the city of Nara, Japan. It is one of the oldest and most significant temples in Japan, dating back to the 7th century. Hōryū-ji is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered to be one of the seven great temples of Nara.

The temple complex consists of a variety of buildings and structures, including the main hall, pagoda, lecture hall, and library. The buildings are constructed in a style known as the Asuka Period, which is characterized by the use of wood and architectural features such as sloping roofs and ornate carvings.

The main hall of Hōryū-ji is particularly notable for its large central statue of Yakushi Nyorai, a Buddhist deity associated with healing. The statue is surrounded by smaller figures and intricate carvings, including depictions of various animals and mythical creatures.

In addition to its impressive architecture and artwork, Hōryū-ji is also significant for its historical and cultural importance. The temple was founded by Prince Shōtoku, a prominent figure in Japanese history who is credited with helping to bring Buddhism to Japan. The temple also played an important role in the development of Japanese art and culture, and many of its artifacts are now housed in museums around the world.
