Founded in Kyoto in 1912, Kikunoi is renowned for its seasonal and traditional dishes, which are elegantly presented and served with exceptional hospitality.

Our visit to Kikunoi in Akasaka was nothing short of spectacular. The restaurant’s decor is understated yet sophisticated, with clean lines, muted colors, and natural materials that exude a Zen-like calm. The ambiance is serene, and the service is impeccable, with attentive staff who anticipate guests’ needs and cater to their every whim.

The menu at Kikunoi is a tribute to the seasonal bounty of Japan’s diverse regions, with dishes that showcase the flavors, textures, and colors of each ingredient. The kaiseki-style course meal consists of multiple small plates that are artfully arranged and served in a specific order. Each dish is a masterpiece in itself, with intricate garnishes, delicate sauces, and subtle seasonings that enhance the natural taste of the ingredients.

Our meal began with a trio of small appetizers that set the tone for the rest of the meal. The sashimi platter was a visual and gustatory delight, with fresh, succulent seafood that melted in our mouths. The grilled beef with wasabi was another standout, with tender meat and a pungent kick from the wasabi. The tempura course was light and crispy, with an assortment of vegetables and seafood that were perfectly cooked.

The main courses were equally impressive, with dishes that ranged from the hearty to the refined. The grilled fish with miso sauce was a standout, with flaky, moist flesh and a savory umami flavor. The Wagyu beef, cooked to perfection, was tender and succulent, with a rich, buttery taste that lingered on the tongue. The vegetable course, which featured a variety of seasonal vegetables, was a refreshing and colorful interlude that cleansed the palate and left us feeling light and energized.
